Mastering capability means optimizing assets inside the enterprise and a vast array of sources and relationships outside. It begins with knowing how to assess the value of the totality of your assets and how well you use them. Only then is it possible to make a clear business case for upgrading, replacing, or supplementing your capabilities with additional investments or external resources. We know that information technology and HR are two critical levers to these elements of capability: they must work effectively throughout the company not just in specialized departments. Whenever companies do not use them well they miss opportunities, waste money, and are exposed to risk.
